Connecticut River Trout Fishing Threatened

A Vermont fishing guide discovered an algae in the Connecticut River that could threaten it’s trout population and even wipe native trout species out completely.

The algae in question is “didymo,” or better known as “rock snot” which evasively takes over water sheds with thick mats of algae which overtake rivers and streams effected.

State biologists are meeting this Friday to discuss a plan of action for notifying the public of the issue at hand and also coming up with a solution to the problem.

The algae can become attached to fishing gear, boats and just about anything else it comes in contact with and live for weeks out of water. This clearly presents a huge problem that can not easily be contained nor controlled. In fact its been speculated that the algae has already been transfered to other fisheries which will also be effected by it.

The state’s biologists also plan to meet with their counterparts in New Hampshire, which shares the Connecticut River with Vermont.
