Fish, A Quick Run Down
Fish what are they exactly? Fish are vertebrates, Like all other vertebrates - mammals, birds, humans and reptiles they have in internal backbone. there are some animals which are called fish, but in reality they are not fish at all, jellyfish would be a good example of that.
So fish are vertebrates that live in the water, breath underwater and have all of the basic features of a vertebrate - brain, ears, blood, muscles and bone. In addition fish have a few special features a little different than the common vertebrate, like gills and fins. To really understand fish we have to remember that their ways of existing are unlike all other animals because of the environment in which they live.
As of right now there are over 20,000 known fish species around the globe. This number includes all species from all types of water - streams, rivers, ponds and oceans. Fish outnumber all other vertebrates by species and by individual numbers. It would be foolish to even try to take a guess at just how many fish are swimming the waters of the world.
We have come a long way in understanding fish throughout the years, though there is still much to be discovered, which will continue helping the food industries, sport fishing and the preservation of endangered species.
